Abstract

1,197,239. Self-steering axles. B. CESCHI. 11 Oct., 1968 [14 Oct., 1967], No. 48276/68. Heading B7H. In a stabilizer device for applying a variable centreing force to the wheels of a self-steering axle, a deformable air chamber 1 formed of elastic material is interposed between end plates 3 on pusher pins 4 which are slidable in sleeves 6 supported by brackets 7 from the axle beam 8 and have teeth 4a projecting through slots 6a in the sleeves 6 for engagement with projections 9 on a track rod 3, and an auxiliary reservoir 12 connected through a line 11 to the chamber 1 is pressurized from a compressed air tank 19 either directly or through a pressure reducing valve 17 according to the setting of a distributer valve 16. The distributer valve is sited for manual operation from the ground or from the driving cab so that the pressure in the chamber 1 and hence the centreing force exerted on the wheels may be adjusted according to whether the vehicle is loaded or empty.
