Abstract

1,197,128. Centrifugal separators. TURBOSEPARATOR A.G. 27 May, 1968 [2 June, 1967], No. 25326/68. Heading B2P. In a screw centrifuge for separating abrasive solids from a machine-tool cooling liquid contained in a tank 15 disposed below the centrifuge housing 1, a solids-discharge screw 9 fixed to a drive shaft 8 extends through a rotatable centrifuge drum 2 into the tank for delivering the mixture of solids and liquid to be separated to the drum, the discharge screw and the drum being operatively connected by means of a unidirectional freewheel coupling 10 and braking means being provided for periodically braking the drive shaft during operation so that the speed of rotation of the discharge screw lags at periodic time intervals behind the speed of rotation of the drum. The discharge screw 9 has a funnelshaped extension 13 provided with blades 14 which serve to pump the solids-liquid mixture from the tank 15 into the drum 2. The screw threads of discharge screw 9 are carried by a spider 1 between the arms of which the solidsliquid mixture passes towards the wall of the drum 2. Solids discharged by the screw fall through an annular shaft in the tank 15 into a removable drawer 22, while the separated liquid is forced through passages 18 into a chamber 19 from which it is withdrawn under pressure. The shaft 8 is driven by an electric motor 11 via a belt 12. Periodical braking of the shaft 8, and hence of the discharge screw 9, may be effected by controlled reversal of phase of the electric motor, the control being effected by an adjustable timing relay 20, or by a periodically controlled mechanical brake acting directly on the drive shaft. The braking frequency may be controlled as a function of the quantity of solids separated or to be separated. One or, as shown, a number of spring-loaded cone valves 23, Fig. 3, are arranged in the centrifuge drum wall which, during operation of the centrifuge, are closed under the action of centrifugal force but which open automatically at a given speed of rotation below the operating speed so that when the centrifuge is shut down the liquid does not flow back through the drum into the drawer 22 but is discharged through the valve openings.
