Abstract
478,816. Centrifugal machines. HARVEY, C. E. July 25, 1936, No. 20656. [Class 23] Solids separated from liquids in a centrifugal machine are discharged from the bowl through peripheral apertures controlled by rotary star valves actuated continuously or intermittently. The outer housing 1 supports a journal bearing 7 and a thrust bearing 5 to carry the vertical shaft 6 driven by the belt 9 or by an electric motor mounted on the housing cover. The shaft carries the conical rotor 10 and a deflector 13 located just below the inlet 15 to the rotor. A discharge opening 14a for liquids is formed in the base-plate 14 of the rotor. Sloping walls 34, Fig. 3, form tapering mouths for the separated solids to pass through to the ducts 18 which are terminated by rotary star valves 19 having four pockets. These valves are slowly rotated while the machine is working, through reduction gearing from the gear ring 31 on the rotor neck. The material is supplied through the hopper 16 and is spread in the rotor by the deflector 13. The separated liquid is discharged through the opening 14a to the chamber 36 and the discharge pipe 37. The solids pass into the ducts 18 and one of the valve pockets. As each valve rotates, the deposited solids are carried past a perforated or slotted wall 21 so that any liquid remaining with the solids can be expelled into a spoutlike deflector 22 from which it passes to the trough 23. The valve pocket is then turned to discharge the solids through an aperture in the valve casing 20 against the inner surface of the inner wall of the trough 23 from which it drops to the hopper 26. A modification shown in Fig. 7 and used where fine solid particles are to be separated from liquid, has a number of discs 39, the larger of which are placed lower than the others in the bowl. This causes a high mean peripheral speed to be imparted to the material as it travels through the rotor. A slowly rotating table of gauze may receive the solid material as it is discharged.
