The stringers 1, 2 of a sliding clasp fastener each comprises a garment attachment portion 3 and a coupling elements attachment portion 4, each portion 4 having coupling elements 15 movable during their engagement and disengagement in a plane X-X characterised by its location between the planes of garment attachment portions 3, 3. In a modification, fig. 3, not shown, the coupling elements attachment portion (34) is at right angles to the garment attachment portion (33).
