In a screw press comprising upper and lower press members 62, 89, and at least two parallel screws 56, 57 having threads of opposite hand, the screws being rotatable when the carriages are moved relative to one another, each screw carries a flywheel 60, 61 and has a collar-like thrust bearing 54, 55 at one end. In Fig. 1 the lower press member 89 is stationary and the screws are threaded at their upper ends 56a, 57a only. The axial drive is provided by doubleacting pistons 58, 59 in cylinders 70, 71. Flywheels 60, 61 are formed with meshing teeth. Hydraulic liquid is supplied by a pump 64 through a control valve 66 having a slide 67 movable by a control handle 73. A magnetic valve 74 in the return line from the cylinders 70, 71 is closed shortly before the end of the return stroke to brake the upward-moving carriage. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a screw press having four screws (77-80), and interengaging toothed flywheels, is driven by two pressure cylinders (85, 86) provided at the side. Fig. 3 shows a further embodiment in which the screwed spindles 90, 91 are driven through bevel gearing 88, 99, 97, 98 coupled by magnetic clutches 92, 93 with drive pulleys 94, 95 freely rotating in opposite directions on a shaft 87. Simultaneous actuation of both clutches is prevented.
