Abstract

1,196,918. Container-tipping attachments for fork-lift units. R. SANDERSON. 10 July, 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 52261/66. Headings B8E and B8H. A container-tipping attachment for a forklift mechanism comprises a U-shaped frame 5, 5a, viewed from beneath in Fig. 1, pivotally supporting on an axis 14 a frame 7, 7a which is provided with a releasable lock to prevent tilting and with a gripper device for securing a container thereto. Hydraulic rams 3 are each pivotally connected between brackets 4 on the frame member 5a and, via a pin-and-slot connection 6, 6a, the tiltable frame member 7a. When the frame 7, 7a is initially horizontal, on initial retraction of the rams 3, the pin 6a moves along the slot causing a rod 12 connected to the pins to move rearwardly to rotate a latch 13 pivoted on the frame member 7a out of engagement with the frame member 5a. At the same time, a further rod 8 connected to the pins 6a pivots gripper members 10 to the upright position to grip a container between these members 10 and fixed members 11. Further retraction of the rams then causes the frame 7, 7a to rotate to the position shown in Fig. 3. In a second embodiment, Fig. 8, the tiltable frame 35 is pivoted at 36 to the frame 30, 31 and is provided with a tubular post 44. A member 45 is guided within the post 44 by rollers 46 and is provided with an arm 50 and with a rod 47 adapted to pass through an opening in the cross member of the frame 35 supporting the post. In the non-tilted position of the frame 35, the member 45 is supported in the position shown by engagement of the rod 47 with the cross-member 31 of the frame 30, 31. As the frame 35 is rotated by extension of rams 38, the rod 47 passes through the opening in the frame 35 allowing the member 45 to fall within the post and thereby causing the arm 50 to move down to engage the top of the container 43. The arm 50 is locked in engagement with the container by means of a pin 54 which is spring-urged to pass through corresponding openings in the post 44 and in the member 45. A cam device is provided to withdraw the pin as the frame 35 returns to the position shown.
