Abstract
1,196,279. Presses. L. (WLADYSLAW) PUTKOWSKI. 1 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966], No. 54873/67. Heading B5F. [Also in Division G1] A machine for applying tension or compression to a body comprises two platens, at least one of which is movable towards the other, and elongated bars movable to and from a position in which the platens are locked together through co-operating teeth on at least one of the platens and both of the bars. In one example, Fig. 1, pressure is applied to a body 27 mounted between platens 8, 12 by means of an hydraulic cylinder 24 and piston 26, the platens 8, 12 being locked together by tie bars 32, 34 having teeth 52, 54 engaging teeth 56, 58 on the platen 12. The tie bars 32, 34 are pivoted on bushings 40, 42 and moved to and from locking position by toggle linkage 66, 68, 66a, 68a operated by hydraulic motors 60, 61. Long stroke movement of platen 12 is effected by an hydraulic cylinder 18 or by toggles, gears, or racks (not shown). Fig. 6 shows a modification in which tie bars, as 32<SP>1</SP>, are moved bodily linearly inwardly and provided with teeth 52<SP>1</SP>, 108 to engage corresponding teeth on both platens 8<SP>1</SP> and 12<SP>1</SP>. Movement of tie bar 32<SP>1</SP> is effected by pivoted links 102, 106 and a vertically movable rod 94. An hydraulic piston and cylinder (not shown) mounted on platen 8<SP>1</SP> may be used to press an object against platen 12<SP>1</SP>. The platen 12<SP>1</SP> may be moved by an hydraulic cylinder 18<SP>1</SP>, and platen 8<SP>1</SP> may be similarly operated or may be fixed to a side guide 4<SP>1</SP> by bolts 112. In Fig. 7 (not shown) downward movement of the upper platen (12<SP>1</SP>) is accompanied by inward movement of the tie bars (32<SP>1</SP>, 34<SP>1</SP>) through cam plates (122, 124) and pivoted camming bars (130, 132) connected to pull rods (94, 142). The interengaging teeth on the tie bars and platens may be shaped as in Figs. 4 or 8A (not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 9) the tie bars, as 150, are guided on pins 184 for inward and downward movement by means of a downwardly moved rod 170. This rod has camming portions 174, 176 co-operating with camming surfaces 166, 168 of the tie bar 150. Teeth 156 and 160 on the tie bar 150 co-operate with teeth 158 and 162 on the movable and stationary platens 152 and 154 respectively. The final pressing action of the press is effected as the surfaces 198 of teeth 156 slide over the surfaces 190 of teeth 158 to move the platen 152 downwardly by a distance indicated by y+z in Fig. 9. Movement of rod 170 may be effected hydraulically through a pivoted link 183, or by a toggle linkage. A tensile force may be applied to an object by reversal of the slope of the teeth (Fig. 8, not shown).
