Abstract

1,196,169. Printing apparatus; marking device. R. H. WEBBE. 15 Aug., 1967 [24 Aug., 1966], No. 37551/67. Heading B6C. A marking device comprises an embossed roller rotatably mounted on the end of an elongated hollow body constituting a handle wherein the ink is conveyed to the periphery of the roller from an ink-charged flexible pad. The basic embodiment is illustrated by Fig. 5 (also Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), wherein an ink-saturated pad 11 protrudes from one end of the hollow body 10 of the device through a neck portion 12; a marking roller 15d is rotatably mounted on arms (16) (Fig. 2, not shown) which extend from the neck 12, the periphery of the roller pressing on the pad 11. Fig. 4 shows an alternative arrangement where an idler roller (24) is disposed between the pad and the marking roller (also Fig. 3, not shown). The body 10b may house separate pads 11b, 11c separated by a divider 29, and the rollers may be correspondingly split 15b, 15c, 24b, 24c, for simultaneous multi-colour printing; in this Figure, the pads completely fill the body of the device and may be re-inked through plug 25, or may be replaced as may the marking roller(s). Both the marking roller and the idler roller may move longitudinally in slotted bearings 28, and a scroll spring 31, Fig. 5, may be provided for returning the roller 15a to its initial position after each printing operation; a cam 39 may trip the spring if continuous printing is required.
