Abstract

1,196,017. Hydrocracking. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 28 Nov., 1967 [30 Nov., 1966]. No. 54023/67. Heading C5E. A process for the conversion of a hydrocarbon charge stock, of which at least 10% by volume boils above 1050‹ F., and which contains at least 1À0% by weight sulphur, to a product of which a substantial portion boils below 700‹ F., and which contains less than 1À0% by weight sulphur, comprises (a) separating said charge stock in a first separation zone to provide a light fraction having an end boiling point within a range of from 650‹ F. to 850‹ F., and a heavy fraction having an initial boiling point above 650‹ F.; (b) admixing said heavy fraction with hydrogen, and heating the resulting mixture to a temperature above 700‹ F.; (c) contacting the resulting heating mixture with a catalytic composite in a first conversion zone maintained at a pressure greater than 68 atmospheres gauge; (d) separating the resulting conversion zone effluent, in a second separation zone at substantially the same pressure as that of the first conversion zone, and at a temperature above 700‹ F., to provide a first vapour stream and a first liquid stream; (e) further separating at least a portion of said first liquid stream, in a third separation zone at a pressure in a range of from sub-atmospheric to 6À8 atmospheres gauge, and at a temperature within a range of 550‹ F. to 900‹ F. to provide a residuum fraction and a second vapour stream; (f) combining said second vapour stream, said first vapour stream, and said light fraction, and contacting the resulting mixture with a catalytic composite in a second conversion zone at conditions selected to convert sulphurous compounds into hydrogen sulphide and hydrocarbons; and (g) separating the second conversion zone effluent, in a fourth separation zone at a temperature within the range of from 60‹ F. to 130‹ F. to provide a hydrogen-rich third vapour stream, and a normally liquid hydrocarbon product. The starting material may be a tar sands crude, a topped or reduced crude, an atmospheric bottoms fraction or a vacuum residuum. The catalyst in both zones may comprise molybdenum, tungsten, chromium. iron, cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium, osmium, iridium, ruthenium or rhodium or mixtures on alumina, silica, boria, magnesia, zirconia, titania, strontia, or hafnia or mixtures (including silica-alumina boron phosphate).
