Abstract

1414494 Hydrodesulphurizing asphaltic oils GULF RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 8 Dec 1972 [8 Dec 1971] 56785/72 Heading C5E Asphaltic feed oil, containing propane- and pentane-insoluble asphaltenes and propaneinsoluble but pentane-soluble resins, is hydrodesulphurized at a hydrogen partial pressure of 70-350 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> using a catalyst comprising a Group VI metal and a Group VIII metal on alumina containing less than 1% silica in two zones by partially desulphurizing the oil in a first zone at a severity at which the resin and asphaltene contents of the oil cannot be further hydrodesulphurized without reducing the aromatics content by hydrogenation to saturates, separating the first zone effluent into a lower boiling fraction and a higher boiling fraction, which higher-boiling fraction has an increased weight ratio of aromatics to saturates than that of the first zone effluent, and is passed through a second hydrodesulphurization zone containing a bed of the catalyst particles of diameter 0À64 to 1À30 mm. at a temperature of 360‹ to 427‹ C. which is increased within this range during the reaction to compensate for catalyst ageing, the second zone is operated for at least 3 months at a CHSV of 0À1 to 10 to produce an effluent comprising an asphaltic fuel oil containing less than 1 % by weight sulphur and of which not less than 50% by weight has a boiling point greater than the initial boiling point of the feed oil to the first zone and not more than 20% by weight has a boiling point lower than 191‹ C.
