1,195,143. Naphthalimide derivatives. NIPPON KAYAKU K.K. 29 Jan., 1968 [30 Jan., 1967; 10 May, 1967; 2 Sept., 1967], No. 4520/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] Novel compounds of the general formula wherein R 1 is an alkyl group or an alkyl group substituted with a hydroxyl, alkoxy, phenoxy or phenyl group; n is 2 or 3; X is where R 2 and R 3 are each alkyl groups, substituted alkyl groups or alicyclic groups or R 2 and R 3 together form a ring including the amino N atom; R 4 is H or the residual group of a quaternizing agent, and when R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are all methyl groups and n is 3, R 1 has two or more carbon atoms; R 5 is H or alkyl; R 6 is alkyl, phenyl, or substituted phenyl; Y is an anion, are prepared by (1) treating naphthalic acid-4-sulphonic acid anhydride with an amine of the general formula NH 2 -(CH 2 ) n N(R 2 )R 3 , or subjecting the resulting naphthalimide-4-sulphonic acid to reaction with an alcohol or an alcoholate thereof of general formula R 1 OH in the presence of a condensing agent and finally treating the compound with a quaternizing agent or with an inorganic or organic acidic compound capable of forming a salt with the amine or (2) alkylating 4-hydroxynaphthalic acid anhydride with an alkylating agent, subjecting the product to reaction with one of the amines as used in method (1) and finally treating the resulting product with a quaternizing agent or with an inorganic or organic acidic compound capable of forming a salt with the amine. Numerous examples are given, in which R 1 is CH 3 , C 3 H 7 , CH 3 OC 2 H 4 , C 4 H 9 , C 2 H 5 OC 2 H 4 , C 6 H 5 C 2 H 4 or C 2 H 5 . Amongst the quaternizing agents employed are HCl, H 2 SO 4 , HClO 4 , ClCH 2 CO 2 H, CH 3 CO 2 H, p-toluenesulphonic acid and alkyl esters thereof, the acid chloride thereof, alkyl and aralkyl halides, C 6 H 5 OC 2 H 4 Cl, ClCH 2 CONH 2 , ClCH 2 COOC 2 H 5 , acetyl chloride, ethylsulphonyl chloride, dialkyl sulphates and sultones. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 962,019.
