Abstract

1,194,414. Organo - antimony - tin compounds. CHEMISCHE WERKE MUNCHEN OTTO BARLOCHER G.m.b.H. 7 June, 1967 [1 July, 1966], No. 26235/67. Heading C2J. [Also in Division C3] Organo-antimony-tin compounds are made by reacting at least two mercapto compounds, at least one of which is bifunctional (SH/SH or SH/CO 2 H) with either: (1) dialkyl tin oxide or alkoxide and antimony trioxide with or without an aliphatic carboxylic acid (C 4 or more); or (2) dialkyl tin dihalide and antimony trihalide in presence of an alkali, with or without an alkali derivative of an aliphatic carboxylic acid (C 4 or more). Reaction in either case is effected by heating in presence of a non-aqueous solvent with continuous removal of the water produced in the reaction, and with final removal of the non-aqueous solvent. Typical compounds are: where R<SP>1</SP> is an organic group (which may contain Sn and/or Sb) linked to Sn via a -CO 2 H or -SH group and is the radical of a mercaptan or a carboxylic acid as defined; R<SP>2</SP> is alkyl, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are organic groups linked to the S atom via a C atom and are, together with the S atom, radicals of mercapto compounds, and R<SP>5</SP> is an organic group (which may contain Sn and/or Sb) linked to the S atom via a C atom. Specified starting materials are dibutyl tin oxide, dioctyl tin oxide, and dibutyl tin dichloride; maleic acid, α-ethyl hexyl acid, 2,2-dimethyl heptanic acid, isooctanoic acid, and isononanoic acid; thioglycolic acid, #- mercapto-propionic acid, thioglycolic acid isooctyl ester, thioglycolic acid lauryl ester and ethylene glycol dithioglycolate. The compounds are used as polymer stabilizers (Division C3).
