Abstract

1,194,364. Reciprocating motors, pumps and compressors. A.W. VAUDT. June 30, 1967. No. 30397/67. Headings F1A and F1N. A fluid actuated reciprocating motor, preferably for operating pump pistons 24, comprises a housing 12, a valve body 14 having a fluid inlet port 48 and a fluid outlet port 56, a shaft 22 movable relative to and passing through the valve body 14, pistons 26 disposed on each side of the valve body to form a first and a second chamber 32, 34, first and second valve elements 58, 70 movable within the valve body, and first and second spring means 68, 98 arranged between each piston 26 and the said elements 58, 70, the second spring means 98 being stronger than the first spring means 68. The valve elements 58, 70 are provided with three symmetrical arcuate grooves (64) Fig.3 (not shown). Each motor piston 26 is connected by a sleeve 28 to a pump piston 24 working in a pump chamber 36, 38 with inlet and exhaust valves 78, 80. Intermediate chambers 39, 40 have exhaust openings 82, 84. Spring assemblies 86 have cavities 90 to receive the first and second spring means 68, 98. The outer ends of the springs 98 are adapted to be engaged by a washer element 100 mounted on the face of the piston 26. In operation hydraulic working fluid enters the inlet opening 48 and into the left chamber 32 via the valve element 58. The piston 26 is forced to the left accordingly and thereby discharges pumped fluid from the chamber 36 through the outlet valve 80. At the same time working fluid from chamber 34 is forced through outlet 56 via the valve element 70 until the pistons are in the extreme left position when sufficient pressure is exerted on the valve elements 58, 70 through the springs 98, 68 to move these elements to the extreme left position. The working fluid then entering the inlet 48 will pass into the chamber 34 and fluid from chamber 32 will be forced out through the outlet 56, thus setting up a cycle. The shaft 22 and the pistons 24, 26 are free to rotate thus distributing any wear in the system over a large area. In a modification Fig. 1 (not shown) a piston 26A is provided with a plurality of spring cavities (200) which contain diametrically opposed weaker springs (202) which are longer than the adjacent stronger springs (204).
