Abstract

1,194,276. Hydro-pneumatic vehicle suspension. V. LANGEN, [trading as LANGEN & CO.]. 21 Aug., 1968, No. 40024/68. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] In a hydro-pneumatic vehicle suspension wherein a wheel-supporting member (axle) 1 pneumatically supports a vehicle body by two or more gas chambers 7, 9, deflection of the wheel axle 1 beyond each end of a predetermined range of movement operates a stop valve 10 to cut off one 9 (or more) of the gas chambers, simultaneously or in succession, to increase the load/deflection characteristic of the pneumatic spring. As shown in Fig. 1 the axle 1 is supported by an hydraulic displacer unit communicating with the hydraulic fluid chamber 6 of a hydropneumatic accumulator 4 the gas chamber 7 of which communicates via a pipe 8 with a gas reservoir 9 through a spool-type stop valve 10. The valve 10 is mechanically operable by a lost-motion linkage 7 which follows movement of the axle 1 to effect closing of pipe 8 on deflections beyond predetermined limits. In an alternative arrangement the reservoir 9 is replaced by an accumulator similar to 4 and the hydraulic fluid chambers of the two accumulators are linked via a pipe incorporating the stop valve. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement wherein two air chambers 31 and 32 are provided in a common casing 28 separated by a rigid wall 30 having a central aperture 36 sealable by a valve 37. The valve stem 38 extends through the chamber 30 to terminate in a piston 39 movable in a cylinder 40 against a spring 41 by hydraulic fluid ducted into the cylinder chamber 42 via a pipe 43 and a stop valve 44. The valve 44 is supported between springs 47, 48, connected respectively with the axle 1 and vehicle body, to be moved, on excessive deflection of the axle in either direction, to disconnect the pipe 43 from exhaust and to connect it to an hydraulic fluid pump 46 whereby to raise piston 39 and valve 37 to close the aperture 36. In this arrangement the casing 26 encloses an hydraulic fluid chamber 34 separated from the gas chamber 31 by a flexible diaphragm 33. In both arrangements a level control valve 12 is incorporated.
