Abstract
1,193,879. Grinding. BURGESS-NORTON MFG. CO. 28 June, 1967, No. 29885/67. Heading B3D. A rotary abrading element for mounting on a drum 20 comprises a sleeve 24 of flexible material having bands of abrasive particles bonded to its outer surface, certain 30 of the bands being more abrasive than others. The drum is supported in bearings 9, one of which is swingable away from the drum to provide access to one end thereof. A peripheral portion 22 of the drum is formed of elastic or resilient material having slots 26 cut therein inclined to the radius of the drum and extending helically along the drum. The parts 28 of the portion 22 outwardly of the drum expand radially during rotation of the drum to grip the sleeve 24 which is preferably of sheet steel having particles of tungsten carbide bonded to its outer surface. The particles of the bands 30 are coarser than those covering the remainder of the sleeve so that grooves are formed in a piece of wood treated by the element. The element 8 and drum 20 may be disposed between shoes 10 which have slots 12 connected to a dust extraction apparatus and press the work W against spring-pressed rollers 13, the work being fed by rollers 16, 17. A re-sawn effect can be produced on wood panels which are fed with the grain cross wise to the abrading element. A number of elements may be arranged in two staggered rows or end-to-end on a common shaft. The slots 26 permit air to pass therealong to cool the abrasive element; one end of the drum may be disposed in a pressurized zone and the other in a low pressure zone to induce air flow along the slots.
