A gate valve having two conjointly operable closure members 12, 13 controlling flow between passageways 2, 3 through a casing 1 is provided with two by-pass pipes 4, 5, each having a valve 41, 51 so that the casing may be selectively connected with either passageway independently of the closure members. Scrapers 16, 17 in the form of knives or rasps are provided at least on the leading edge in the direction of closure of the closure members.
