Abstract

1,191,705. Bearings. BARNES MFG. CO. 6 Sept., 1967 [20 Sept., 1966], No. 40813/67. Heading F2A. [Also in Division F1] A centrifugal pump has a housing 10, Fig. 2, having a chamber 28 with an impeller 44 therein, the latter being carried by a shaft 40 which is mounted in a bearing 34 of thermoplastics material. The shaft 40 has a journal sleeve 38 which is of stainless steel, of tungsten carbide or is coated with tungsten carbide. The bearing 34 has tapered splines 50, Fig. 3, which are received by slots 52 in a support 30 and has a flange 54 to prevent upward axial movement of the bearing. The support 30 is secured to the housing 10 by means of screws 33. In use, the impeller 44 is driven by a motor 16, Fig. 1, which is mounted on a perforated strainer column 14, a column base portion 12 being positioned between the latter and the housing 10. Water flows through perforations 46 in the strainer 14, past the bearing 34, through openings 48 in the support 30, past the impeller 44 and out of an orifice 26. In a modification the bearing is positioned near the top end of the pump, the shaft is hexagonalshaped and is received in a hexagonal-shaped bore of the journal-sleeve.
