Abstract
119,086. Marshall, G. M. Sept. 19, 1917. Signalling proximity of vessels.-For detecting submarines, a submerged casing 18 anchored at any desirable depth contains a magnetized needle member 28, pivoted at 22 to move about a horizontal axis and balanced so that the end 30 normally rests against an insulated stud or stop 37. The proximity of a passing submarine or other iron body is stated to cause the needle to move so that the ends 30, 31 contact respectively with fixed contacts 40, 61 in the circuit of an audible or visible signalling device. Contact 40 is insulated and connected with an insulated wire 45, the insulation of which has a spherical enlargement 48 where it passes through the wall of the casing. Contact 61 is earthed through the casing. A modification is described in which two magnetized pivoted members are used.
