Amines are produced by reacting ketones or the corresponding secondary alcohols of the alkane, arylalkane or cycloalkane series in the liquid phase with ammonia and hydrogen at 100-250‹ C. and 50-300 atmospheres pressure in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst which contains at least one sulphur-sensitive metal of Group 1B, VII A or VIII of the Periodic Table, the active component of the catalyst having been prepared from the metal or from an oxygen compound of the metal by sintering at elevated temperature followed by treatment with hydrogen at an elevated temperature below 600‹ C.
