Abstract

1,190,381. Seaming. WILLIAM GARFIELD Ltd. 15 Sept., 1967 [16 June, 1966; 17 Nov., 1966], Nos. 26926/66 and 51506/66. Heading B3J. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for filling and sealing a container, which may be of metal foil, includes sealing means comprising displaceable platens and dies for clamping together a lid and a peripheral flange on the container, and for effecting telescopic motion, first to fold the clamped parts downwards, and then to roll them together in a return movement. Feeding and filling containers.-Pre-formed flanged container bodies 10, placed successively on a platform 81, Fig. 1, pivoted at 82, operate a switch 83 causing a stroke of cylinder 55 coupled to parallel reciprocable rods 53, (54). Conveyer fingers 70 pivoted on the rods push the container 10 along a guideway 72 as far as charging station 85, where the container is filled with the desired contents. The fingers 70 pivot into ineffective positions during the return stroke. Sealing containers.-A stack of foil lids 11 is held in a magazine 44, and movement of the rods 53, (54) causes a platform 48 on a carriage 42 to advance after removing the bottom lid 11 from the stack by means of a suction pad 43. The platform 48 is caused to pivot as necessary by pneumatic means 52. Actuation of a trip finger 58 then causes the carriage to place the lid 11 against a second suction pad 41, Fig. 3, which retains the lid because of vacuum interchange between the two pads, and the carriage 42 returns to its initial position. The pad 41 is mounted on a platen 21 above a fixed die 13 into which a container has been pushed by fingers (88), Fig. 2 (not shown). The die 13 is surrounded by an outer die 14 on which the flange of the container rests, and which is provided with an annular groove 15. A further platen 22 is arranged above die 14. A ram 25 causes the platens 21, 22 to move downwardly, clamping the lid 11 with the container flange, and further downward movement produces telescopic motion of platen 22 and die 14 about platen 21 and die 13, causing the flange and lid periphery to fold downwards, forming a skirt (30), Fig. 5 (not shown). When the pressure of the ram is released, a spring 19 causes die 14 to rise with platen 22, thus rolling together the lid and flange within the groove 15 to form a rolled seam 33, Fig. 6. The sealed container is now ejected by a ram 63 prior to the arrival of a fresh container for sealing.
