Apparatus for filling containers with a carbonated beverage (e.g. beer) comprises a supply tank (not shown) of carbonated beverage maintained at a pressure greater than the equilibrium pressure of the gas in the beverage, a filling head 16, a beverage line 17 extending from the supply tank, a filling tube 21 extending from the beverage line, a gas line 18, an electric probe 19, and valves 22, 26 provided in the lines 18, 17 respectively, and connected to pneumatic cylinders 23, 28 respectively, and a base 6 for supporting a container 7, which can be lifted into sealing engagement with the filling head 16 by a pneumatic piston 5 and cylinder 4. The filling operation is controlled from a control box 25, which may be operated manually, in which the container is lifted into engagement with the filling head, the engagement actuating a control valve (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), to open valve 22 to pressurize the container until at a predetermined value a pressure switch (not shown) actuates a control valve (34) to open valve 26 to fill the container. When the level of the beverage touches the probe 19 a control valve (37) operates to close the valves 22, 26 and thereby open the pneumatic cylinder 4 to atmosphere to lower the container. A manual control valve (40) is provided for stopping the filling operation at any time. A pneumatically operated feed cylinder (47) may be provided for feeding empty containers to and discharging filled containers from the base 6, said cylinder being arranged to automatically trip a mechanically operated valve (48) to activate the control valve (32) thus rendering the apparatus automatic in operation, Fig. 3 (not shown).
