1,189,433. Tipping and gripping containers; guiding loads. WHARTON ENGS. (ELSTREE) Ltd. 24 Jan., 1969 [25 Jan., 1968], No. 4029/68. Headings B8B, B8E and B8H. In apparatus for handling articles such as bins, a beam 1 suspended from a winch mounted in a carriage running on an overhead rail (not shown) has two dependent arms 4 hinged to it, the lower ends of the arms being movable away from and towards each other by a hand-operated screw-and-nut assembly 6-9. Bin-engaging members 12 on the arms 4 are both rotatable but one may be rotated by a motor 31 through gearing including a chain and sprocket drive. A filled bin 20 may be emptied after it has been lifted, Figs. 4-7 (not shown), the bin being completely inverted or even turned through 360 degrees. To obviate swinging of the apparatus a frame 60 may be pivotally connected between the beam 1 and a carriage 42, Fig. 9. Alternatively, two or more suspension ropes may be connected to the beam, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). The assembly for moving the arms (4) may be power operated. The chain and sprocket drive for rotating the bin engaging members 12 may be replaced by link and crank means.
