Abstract
1,098,906. Bridge cranes; article engaging devices. H. NIELSEN & SON MASKIN. FABRIK A/S. Sept. 20, 1965, No. 40072/65. Headings B8B and B8H. A gantry crane for transporting railway containers 20, Fig. 1 (not shown), includes a crab 4, Fig. 2, provided with rope drums 6 from which lifting ropes 7 extend obliquely downwards to pulleys 8 on a platform 9, a crosshead 11 rotatably supported beneath the platform and carrying a girder 16 on which is movably supported trolleys 17, and downwardly extending gripping arms 18 carried by the trolleys and movable towards and away from each other for gripping and releasing the containers. The crane is supported by columns 1 travelling on tracks 2 and carrying girders 3 on which runs the crab 4 having an operator's cabin 5. The ropes 7 extend from the drum 6 round the pulleys 8 and then round pulleys 10 on the crab 4 to anchorages on the platform 9, the support being such as to withstand torques about a vertical central axis and deflections due to braking of the crab. The crosshead 11 is supported on a ball-bearing 12 and is rotated by a motor 14 on the platform 9 through a gear-wheel (not shown), engaging a gear rim 15 on the crosshead. The arms 18 are moved by hydraulic rams 19. The girder 16 is supported on a shaft 21 about which it may be pivoted by hydraulic or pneumatic rams 22 for lowering the containers 20 on to sloping supports.
