Abstract

Halogens and their oxygen compounds are cathodically reduced in a fuel cell or electrochemical measuring cell using an electrode which contains as catalytically active substances the metals molybdenum and/or tungsten and/or titanium or an alloy of two or more of these metals. The electrode may comprise a metallic or non-metallic shaped article to which is applied a layer of said electrolytically active substances, e.g. a porous shaped article may be impregnated with tungsten or molybdenum salts, which salts are then converted to the oxides thereof followed by reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere or a porous ceramic or non-porous ceramic or titanium shaped article may be sprayed with molybdenum and/or tungsten and/or titanium or their alloys by the plasma spraying method. The electrodes may also be formed by sintering a mixture of tungsten or molybdenum oxide powders with other metal powders or ceramic substances followed by reduction of the oxides with hydrogen.
