Abstract

1,189,141. Crystallizing polymers during moulding. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 31 March, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 14939/67. Heading B5A. During the formation of a rotationally symmetrical article from a crystallizable polymer, the rate of crystallization of the polymer is increased by subjecting it to shearing stress which is rotational, oscillatory or rotationaloscillatory while the polymer cools from its molten state to a temperature between its melting point and its glass transition temperature. The article may then be annealed at its melting point. The stress is preferably applied by relative rotation, oscillation or rotation with variable angular velocity which is always in the same sense, between two mould parts. When extrusion or compression moulding, the two parts are preferably the male die or core and the female die and when the article is an extruded tube the mandrel is rotated. The polymer may contain up to 15% of plasticizer. The preferred embodiment describes the preparations of polystyrene tumblers by injection moulding in a mould with a rotating core which is rotated with a predetermined torque so that it stalls when the polymer viscosity reaches a predetermined value. The tumbler formed has laminated walls with a central crystalline layer and has improved heat and solvent resistance.
