Abstract

1,112,392. Impact ' rotational ' moulding. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 19 July, 1965 [23 July, 1964], No. 30531/65. Heading B5A. Articles are made by " impact rotational moulding" by charging an impact mould cavity with mouldable thermoplastic raw material, and moulding it by impacting a die into the cavity while one of the mould elements is rotated, the rotation being continued, preferably for a specific, predetermined number of revolutions past the fill point, after completion of the impact stroke until the second order transition point of the material is approached and substantial solidification is obtained. Such rotation preferably applies a torque which is inadequate to overcome the resistant forces generated by the material when solidifying, thereby preventing rotation, and is insufficient to score the moulded articles. The apparatus comprises a mould block with a mould cavity therein, a die capable of reciprocating into and out of the cavity, either the mould block or die being rotatable to apply a torque as specified above. The cavity may have fill point determination means whereby the rotating element may be rotated a specific, predetermined number of revolutions past the fill point.
