Abstract

1,188,794. Storage apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 13 June, 1967 [16 June, 1966], No. 26977/66. Heading B8E. [Also in Division B7] An article storage apparatus comprises a plurality of superposed floors 2 each having an opening 3 therein, the openings being vertically aligned, and pairs of rails 11, a turntable 5 which is vertically movable into alignment with any selected floor and has a pair of rails 7, and a carrier 9 supported on the rails 7 and movable on to any pair of the rails 11, the carrier having means for depositing an article at any selected storage position along the rails 11. The apparatus is incorporated in a ship and the articles are containers, the floors being in the hold and the openings 3 being aligned with a hatch 4. The carrier 9 incorporates a vertically movable frame for supporting the containers and depositing them on plinths 12. The turntable may have two pairs of rails and two carriers, the axis of the turntable being offset from that of the hatch, Fig. 3 (not shown). Two parallel pairs of rails may extend on opposite sides of the opening in each floor, each pair carrying a transfer car having a pair of rails for receiving the carrier, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown). The carrier may be thus transferred to other rails on the floor. The apparatus may be operated automatically or semi-automatically.
