1,188,562. Treating seeds. MINISTERSTVO ZEMEDELSTVI A VYZIVY. 13 July, 1967, No. 32308/67. Heading A2Q. In dressing seed e.g. barley or wheat, against smut, the seed is fed via inlet 2 into tank 1, the pressure is reduced in tank 1 by compressor 4 through multiway valve 5 and steeping aqueous liquid is drawn into tank 1 from source 7 via valve 8, the seed and liquid are retained in tank 1 for up to 45 minutes, the temperature of the liquid being such that the seeds attain a temperature of 4-47‹C., pressure is then supplied to tank 1 by compressor 4 via valve 5 and the excess liquid is drained off via vale 8, and the seed is then hermetically sealed in tank 1 (or another tank) so as to cause the wetted seed to be treated under anaerobic conditions at the attained temperature. The tank 1 is provided with a fermentation closure or trap 9 and seed outlet 11.
