Abstract

1,188,352. Bag-filling apparatus; feeding sheets. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. 16 Feb., 1968 [3 March, 1967], No. 7695/68. Headings B8C and B8B. Apparatus for replacing an exhausted magazine, e.g. of collapsed bags in a packing apparatus, by a full one comprises a support to allow magazines to move to and from a work, e.g. filling station, with means for locating a magazine which is caused to be released, upon exhaustion, by an approaching replacement magazine. The invention is described as applied to a bag-filling machine in which a pair of scoops 14, 16 enter the mouth of a bag 19, previously opened by an air blast and uppermost of a stack in a magazine 20. The scoops 14, 16 open and withdraw the bag, collecting an article from conveyer 10 on the way. During further movement, a stop 26 engages the article to free it into the bag and then to force the filled bag off the scoops to drop on to a discharge conveyer 28. A spring 46 and roller 47 arrangement aligns the next bag for opening by the air blast. The magazines are slidable on rods 20 and when one is empty, a full magazine is driven along the rods 32, 34 by the free end of the piston-rod of a pneumatic motor 66. A cam rail 54 is mounted by a hinge 56 parallel with the rods. A camming member 52 is located on each magazine and this engages in a recess 64 in the rail to locate the magazine during bag filling. As the full magazine approaches the empty one, its cam 52 raises the rail, releasing the empty magazine for removal by hand or for pushing aside by the incoming one which is then located by the recess. The apparatus may be used as an attachment to the machine described in Specification 1,088,222.
