Abstract

1,188,322. Papermaking, non woven fabric. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 24 Feb., 1967, No. 8962/67. Headings D1R, D2A and D2B. A web of non-fibrillated gel fibres of a thermoplastic fibre-forming polymer of acrylonitrile is self-bonded by subjecting it to pressure at a temperature of less than 120‹C for a time not long enough to fuse dry fibres of the polymer, but long enough to produce a web having a wet tensile strength requiring at least 0.45 grams of force per gram per square metre basis weight to break a strip 2.54 cm wide. By "gel fibre" is meant a fibre having a three-dimensional network of interconnected fibrils of polymeric material and voids, the voids being filled by a liquid. This liquid may result from spinning the fibre from -solution and coagulating in a bath, or be liquid from a wash bath used to replace an organic solvent after spinning. The gel fibres may be of homopolymers of acrylonitrile, or of copolymers with up to 20% of allyl alcohol, vinyl acetate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinylpyridine, ethylene-sulphonic acid or its alkalimetal salts, -vinyl-benzene-sulphonic acid or its salts, 2-sulphoethyl methacrylate or its salts, vinyl-caprolactam, vinyl-pyrrolidine or mixtures of these, and may be blended with up to 90% of other fibres, e.g. of nylon, polyester, polyolefine, cellulose or collapsed polyacrylonitrile The gel fibres may be toughened before sheet-formation by subjecting them while free of restraint to a hot aqueous medium, but they must then be cooled before subjecting them to stress. The web may be formed by a scattering mechanism, distribution by a stream of air or water, or deposition by filtering from a liquid. Staple fibres are preferably formed into a web by papermaking technique, continuous filaments also from suspension in water. The rate of drainage of aqueous slurries may be controlled by the process of Specification 1,188,323. The. bonding pressure may be applied uniformly over the whole web, or as a pattern of spaced heated pressure points spaced apart by a distance not greater than the staple length of the fibres. The patterned pressure means may be rolls, plates or a combination of rolls or plates with screens. The bonded web may be heated in an aqueous medium that will not extract water from the gel fibres to partially shrink it, before drying to irreversibly collapse the gel fibres. The bonded fabric may be dried while completely relaxed, e.g. in a hot air oven, particularly after pattern bonding, or by the process of Specification 1,188,325 or that of Specification 1,188,324. The dried web may subsequently be annealed at a temperature at least 30‹C above the glass-transition temperature of the fibres. The bonded web may be impregnated with resinous solids of a chemical composition different from that of the gel fibres. Binders referred to are latices of butadiene/acrylonitrile polymer, polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, and acrylic acid polymers. They may be applied before or after the web has been dried to collapse the gel fibres.
