Abstract

1,160,428. Non-woven fabric, yarns, finishing fabrics, paper. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 Sept., 1967 [20 Sept., 1966], No. 41859/66. Headings D1R, D1S, D1W, D2A and D2B. A bonded fibrous material is made by forming composite "fibres" into a fibrous structure and heating to render one of the fibre components adhesive so as to bond the fibres to each other. The composite fibres comprise at least two immiscible polymers, at least one of which is dispersed in the other(s) and at least one of which, but not all, is rendered adhesive by heating under conditions which leave the other polymer(s) unaffected. The polymers may be polyolefins, polyamides, polyesters, poly (epsiton caprolactam), poly (aminoundecanoic acid) and copolymers thereof. Pigments, brightners, stabilisers and dispersing agents may also be present in the fibres. The term "fibres" includes staple and flock fibres and continuous filaments. The heating may be by air, hot plates or rolls, radiant heat, ultrasonic or dielectric treatment, or steam. The composite fibres may be blended with non- activatable fibres, e.g. wool, silk, flax, cotton, regenerated cellulose, asbestos, rock wool, polyamides and polyesters. The fibrous structure may be a non-woven, woven or knitted fabric, yarn, plied cord or paper if the fibres are less than 0.5" long. The heating stabilises the yarns and fabrics and prevents fibre slipping or laddering. Yarns containing the composite fibres can be used to make scrims or reinforce sheets of plastic. The non-woven material can be formed from (a) fibres by carding, garnetting or cros slapping or air-laying or wet-laying onto a flat or shaped screen, or (b) filaments by collection on a stationary, oscillating, rotating or advancing surface. The non-woven web can be needled.
