Abstract

731,259. Flow meters. ELLIOTT BROS. (LONDON), Ltd. May 29, 1953 [March 3, 1952], No. 5566/52. Class 69 (1). Apparatus for measuring the rate of flow of a liquid or other fluid through a tubular conduit 1 includes a preferably adjustable aerofoil element 2 mounted within the fluid in the conduit, and a flow-indicating means responsive to the difference between a first fluid pressure at a position on the surface of the aerofoil element and a second fluid pressure within the conduit and upstream or otherwise remote from the aerofoil element. As shown, the element 2 is substantially rectangular in plan but has a curved leading edge 32, and is carried by a tube 5 rotatably mounted in a stuffing box 13. Its bore 24 may terminate at 25 in its upper surface, or at 27 in the centre of its trailing edge 26, branch bores 28, 29 opening respectively at the corners 30, 31 of the trailing edge. The two fluid pressures may be applied inside and outside a pair of bellows ,secured to the ends of a beam pivotally mounted inside a casing on a shaft. The movements of the shaft are transmitted to the exterior of the casing by a magnetic coupling and thence by means of an amplifying gear train to apparatus as described in Specification 405,043, [Group XXXVIII], which generates an electric current proportional to the angular deflection of the shaft. This current may then be amplified by a magnetic amplifier and the resultant current caused to operate an indicator or recorder. Alternatively, the shaft may be coupled by an amplifying gear train to a second shaft within the casing and carrying a pointer passing over a dial visible through a transparent window in the casing. According to the Provisional Specification the aerofoil element may be welded to the inner wall of the conduit, and the magnetic amplifier may be of the kind described in Specification 629,287, [Group XXXIX].
