Abstract

1,185,274. Hydocyclones. GRUBBENS & CO. A.B. 12 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 27913/68. Heading B2P. In a hydrocyclone for separating solid impurities from a liquid &c. and comprising a vertical container having upper and lower portions 1, 2 with an inlet 4 for liquid to be treated arranged tangentially to the portion 1 and an outlet 8, 6 for cleaned liquid, an adjustable valve 5 is provided in the inlet 4 with the valve member extending tangentially to the container, the median plane of the valve member being at an angle of 20-90‹ to the axis of the inlet 4 and parallel to the central axis of the hydrocyclone, the outlet or, as shown, a portion 8 thereof extending perpendicularly to the inlet axis and having its entrance orifice located within the orifice below the opening of the inlet therein. The valve 5 serves to maintain or increase the rotational velocity of the liquid through the whole length of the hydrocyclone to obtain optimum separation effect. It may be automatically adjusted to the rate of liquid supply and it may function as a shut-off valve. The inlet upstream of the valve may be progressively reduced in cross-sectional area towards the valve and may be circular, elliptical or square in crosssection. The valve member may be of the gate type or of the slidable or pivotable disc type and its leading edge may be straight or it may be crescent-shaped or toothed to facilitate the passing of impurities carried by the liquid. A rotor 7 may, as shown, be provided in the outlet portion 6 which may be voluteshaped, the rotor also acting to maintain or increase the rotational velocity of the liquid in the hydrocyclone.
