Abstract

1,183,791. Marine seismic vibrator. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 5 Jan., 1968 [5 Jan., 1967; 13 Dec., 1967], No. 870/68. Heading H4D. A marine seismic vibrator comprises two streamlined housing members linked by a flexible seal to define an enclosed volume, and a linear actuator for reciprocating one member with respect to the other. In the Fig. 4 embodiment, cup-shaped housing members 102, 104 are linked by a urethane or P.V.C. seal 106 retained by compression bands 296, 298, and are reciprocated by an hydraulic linear actuator 170 comprising cylinder 174 and piston 204. A conventional linearly variable differential transformer 244 provides a signal indicating the position of piston 204 (see Specification 1,087,504 in Division H4). Ballast weight may be added at 200. An air hose 336 permits adjustment of the pressure inside the vibrator in accordance with ambient water pressure, which is monitored by means of a flexible bag 324 which is distended by the water pressure and so causes a pressure change in the air space of a vessel 154 linked by hose 334 to a towing ship. In a a simplified embodiment (Fig. 1 not shown) housing members 102, 104 are replaced by parallel flat plates whose peripheries are linked by a stainless steel bellows instead of seal 106.
