1,181,518. Continuous casting; casting processes. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Aug., 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 36491/66. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] To produce cast metal, e.g. copper, oxygenfree, it is melted in a furnace 1 under a carbonaceous layer 18 and in an atmosphere of an exothermic gas mixture, derived by combustion in air of a fuel (such as methane or kerosene) giving a product containing approximately equal volumes of CO and H 2 ; the melt is then passed, possibly through a heated launder 4, and holding furnace 6, to a tundish 9 with a plungercontrolled outlet 10 from which it passes through a gas-tight chamber 13 to a mould 12, being protected in the tundish and mould by a gas mixture mainly of N 2 with about 1% vol. of H 2 and having a low vol. ratio (1/20) of oxidizing constituents (CO 2 and water vapour) to reducing constituents (H 2 and CO). Individual castings may be produced, but, as shown, a continuous casting 14, for severance by a flying saw 16, is formed. The atmosphere for the induction-heated furnaces 1 and 6 and launder 4 may contain by volume 11% CO, 12% H 2 , 7% CO 2 , 1% water and 69% N 2 , being the result of burning a rich fuel mixture in a generator 26. Alternatively, the result of combustion of a lean fuel mixture (in a generator 30), i.e. containing 1% each of CO and H 2 , 13% CO 2 , 3% water and 82% N 2 is used. This latter combustion product, after passage through an adsorption unit 29 to remove practically all the CO 2 and water, is the atmosphere supplied to the tundish 9 and mould 12. The channel-type induction furnaces 1, 6 are rotated on rollers 5, 8 to pour metal therefrom.
