Abstract

1,181,447. Disc brakes. KELSEY-HAYES CO. 13 Dec., 1967 [6 Jan., 1967], No. 56710/67. Heading F2E. A caliper 51, Fig. 1, is supported at 51, 59 by a fixed torque plate 21, and the pads (103, 121, Fig. 2, not shown) have backing plates with ears 141, 143, Fig. 5, which engage axial flanges 31, 33 on the torque plate to prevent radially inward movement of the pads, the backing plates also having extensions 151 (153, Fig. 4, not shown) to locate against the caliper wall to prevent radially outward movement. The pads are actuated respectively by a piston 163 and a reaction portion (55) of the caliper, the caliper being mounted by flexible members 57, 59 on the torque plate. The torque on each pad is transmitted to the torque plate by the abutment of shoulders 143<SP>1</SP>, 145 near the ears of the pads, with the facing edges 35, 37 of the flanges 31, 33. A part of the brake torque on one pad 121, is carried by the reaction member 55 to which it is transmitted by pins 133, 135. Extensions 91, 93 on the caliper engage the inner edges or faces of the flanges 31, 33 to guide the caliper during axial movement, the flexible members 57, 59 prohibiting movement parallel to the plane of the disc. In the fluid pressure operating device (Fig. 2, not shown) fluid pressure is applied through an aperture (175), and is exhausted on brake release through an aperture (177). The piston carries the head (241) of a slidable sleeve having a threaded member (223) inside it, the latter having a head (221) which is slotted (at 215) to receive a hand-operated cam (201), and being spring-loaded (at 227) to the OFF position. Relative rotation of the threaded member (223) and the head (241) occurs as the head is carried leftwards by a ball race (244) on the piston when the latter is fluid actuated to the left, so that the wear of the pads is automatically compensated.
