Abstract

1,029,825. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. May 6, 1963 [June 2, 1962], No. 16794/62. Heading F2E. A disc brake has the torque reaction on a friction pad or caliper taken by two abutment surfaces spaced radially on one side only, and at least one of which is inclined to, the drag line so that the reactions from the abutment surfaces intersect each other on the drag line. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, an axially movable caliper 2, 3 is guided on a torque-taking member 7, the abutment surfaces 16, 17 of which are equally inclined to the drag line F so that the equal reaction forces P<SP>1</SP>, Q<SP>1</SP> intersect on the drag line and subtend equal angles to the abutments to provide minimum values for the reaction forces. In a modification one abutment surface may be curved. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), an axially slidable pad 22 bonded to a backing plate 21 is formed with recesses which receive complementary shaped ears 23, 24 of a fixed caliper 20 that has inclined abutments 25, 26. In a modification the pad backing plate may be provided with ears which are received in complementary recesses in the caliper. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), the backing plate 21 is provided with a hole in which is received a guide pin 31 and an inclined recess in which a second guide pin 32 is received, abutments 33, 34 being provided.
