Abstract
1,181,282. Rotary sieving apparatus. MASSEY-FERGUSON G.m.b.H. 10 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23376/67. Heading B2H. A rotary grain cleaning and separating apparatus for use in a combine harvester comprises a rotary hollow circular screen 5, a grain inlet 8 communicating with the interior of the screen, an outlet spaced axially from the inlet, guide means 6 mounted on the inner peripheral surface of the screen to urge grain from the inlet towards the outlet during rotation of the screen, and an air inlet 9 whereby air may be directed from a blower 16 in a direction from the inlet towards the outlet. The guide means is in the form of a spiral member 6 supported by rods or bars 7. A grid 10 formed of axially extending bars is provided at the outlet end of the screen and its effective length is determined by the position of an axially slidable end cover 11 in which an outlet for air and for chaff and foreign material is provided. The screen is driven by a sprocket 12 engaging a chain 13 surrounding the screen and is supported on two rows of rollers, one of which is shown at 14, disposed axially of the screen. A rotary brush 17 effects continuous cleaning of the screen. The apparatus is mounted in a housing 18 having walls 19 converging downwardly to form a trough 20 in which a screw conveyor 21 carries grain falling from the screen into a grain outlet 22. The screen may be cylindrical, frusto-conical or partly cylindrical and partly frusto-conical. In operation, the grain entering the inlet is thrown by centrifugal force against the screen inner surface and conveyed axially by the spiral guide member 6. The grain falls through the screen into the trough 20, while chaff and other light material are blown axially by air from the blower 16 and carried out through the outlet in the end cover 11. At the outlet end of the screen the grain is thrown against the grid 10 and clean grain falls into the trough 20.
