Abstract
1,179,301. Spray-producers. SEALECTRO CORP. 25 Jan., 1967 [27 Jan., 1966; 23 Sept., 1966], No. 3809/67. Heading B2F. A plasma spray gun suitable for coating articles with metals, ceramics, or plastics materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene, comprises an inner electrode 12A, an outer generally cylindrical nozzle electrode 14 arranged coaxially with respect to the electrode 12A, an inlet 28 for a plasma-forming gas under pressure, and a plurality of converging distributing passages 30 which direct the gas into the confined space between the electrodes so as to produce laminar flow. The portion 16A of the electrode nozzle 14 is finely tapered and is upstream of an expansion portion 16C. The powder is fed to the junction 16B of the nozzle electrode portions through a plurality of passages 36 which open tangentially into the interior of the nozzle electrode. The powder may be fluidized by a plasma-forming gas. Both electrodes are water-cooled. The angle (A), Fig. 2 (not shown) of the inner electrode is greater than the angle (B) of the outer electrode. The electrode nozzle 14 may be of copper with a coating in the passage 16 of an alloy having a high nickel content. A plasma-forming gas having a nitrogen to helium ratio of 6:1 is passed through the gun. Generally spherical particles of tetrafluoroethylene are passed through the passages 36 and with the workpiece two to three inches from the end of the gun a coating may be built up at the rate of 1 mil per minute per 36 square inches of surface coated.
