Abstract

1,179,266. Rendering polyesters antistatic. TOYO RAYON K.K. 5 May, 1967 [13 May, 1966; 20 June, 1966], No. 21060/67. Heading C3R. Film- and fibre-forming polyesters are rendered antistatic by incorporating in them (a) a polyalkylene ether substantially insoluble in the polyester and (b) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of an organic sulphonic acid having no ester-forming group. The incorporation may be effected during or after the preparation of the polyester and the antistatic agents may be added in the form of a concentrate in a polyester. The polyalkylene ethers preferably have a molecular weight of at least 1000 and may be etherified or esterified, specified ones being polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polytetrahydrofuran, copolymers of propylene glycol with ethylene glycol or tetrahydrofuran, methoxy polyethylene glycol and polyoxyethylated trimethylolpropane or nonylphenol. Specified polyesters are (i) those of ethylene glycol and various dicarboxylic acid and (ii) p-hydroxyethoxybenzoic acid, the polyesters used in the examples being polyethylene terephthalate and its copolyester with isophthalic acid or adipic acid.
