Abstract

1435021 Copolyesters EASTMAN KODAK CO 27 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972 1 Dec 1972] 45375/73 Heading C3R A process for preparing a copolyester comprises: (a) preparing a fragmented polyester by contacting (i) a starting polyester of a dicarboxylic acid and a diol having an inherent viscosity of at least 0À2 with(ii) from 5 to 95 mole per cent, based on the total moles of (ii) and the dicarboxylic acid of the starting polyester, of an acyloxy aromatic carboxylic acid having at least 3 carbon atoms between the carboxyl group and the acyloxy group, and (b) preparing the final copolyester having an inherent viscosity of at least 0À4 by increasing the inherent visocity of the fragmented polyester. The copolyester has less than 3 mole per cent of oxygen linkages between aliphatic and aromatic carbon atoms (i.e. ether linkages). The starting polyesters used in the examples are polyethylene terephthalate, copoly(80/20 ethylene terephthalate)isophthalate, the polyester formed from ethylene glycol, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-sulphonyldibenzoic acid and 1,12-dodecanedicarboxylic acid, poly(2,6-ethylenenaphthalate), polyethylene terephthalate modified with polytetramethylene glycol, polytetramethylene terephthalate, the polyester formed from bisphenol A and isophthalic acid, copoly(50/50 ethylene terephthalate/2,6-naphthalate) and copoly(95/5 ethylene terephthalate/2,5-dibromoterephthalate) and are reacted with m- or p-acetoxybenzoic acid or a mixture thereof, p-propionyloxybenzoic acid or a mixture of m-acetoxybenzoic acid and p-benzoxybenzoic acid. The copolyesters may be mixed with glass or asbestos fibres. The copolyester formed from polyethylene terephthalate and p-acetoxybenzoic acid may be added to poly(tetramethylene terephthalate).
