Abstract

1,178,710. Toy gun. MATTEL Inc. 28 Dec., 1966 [28 Dec., 1965], No. 57993/66. Heading A6S. [Also in Division G5]. In a toy gun, disc record means are incorporated which play back a gunshot sound and subsequently the sound of a ricocheting bullet when the trigger is pulled. The gun is a rifle with the sound reproducing means in its butt. Forward movement of a cocking lever 174 rotates a gear 170 which drives a rack gear 156 via a pinion 158. This movement moves a rack 110 in the direction of arrow 180, compressing spring 148, until a gear 188 on the trigger mechanism 36 can be urged by one arm of spring 216 into contact with the end 230 of the rack. When the cocking lever is returned to its initial position a flat 236 on the rack gear is parallel to the rack and allows movement of the rack to the left without engagement of the cocking mechanism. A hub at the rear of gear 170 includes a first recess which is engaged by a detent on spring 216 to hold the cocking lever in its initial position and a second recess which co-operates with a projection of the trigger to prevent the trigger being pulled except when the cocking lever is in its initial position. During the final part of the movement of the rack to the right pick up arm 78 is lifted by a sloping lobe member 182 on the rack and moved to a position in which pick up needle 88 is over the outer track of record 40. The turntable record 40 is weighted by a metal ring 308 and is driven via a spring clutch 54, turntable gear 52 and gears 146, 130 from the rack 110. The speed of rotation of the record turntable is controlled by governor means including a pair of weighted brakes which are mounted on the periphery of the turntable and move outwardly against the action of springs, when the speed is excessive, into braking contact with a circular surface 265a. On pulling the trigger the rack moves to the left under the action of spring 148, the turntable is driven and the pick up arm moves out of contact with the lobe member 182 and its pick up needle enters the outer groove in the record. The pick up vibrations are passed via a piston which is spring urged into contact with the pick up arm to the cone speaker 90. At the end of the rack movement the pick up arm is lifted from the record by a second sloping lobe member 270 on the rack.
