Abstract
1,177,725. Bitumen and block copolymer composition. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 13 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 6906/68. Heading C3N. [Also in Division C1] A composition comprises (i) asphaltic bitumen of softening point > 63‹ C., and 0À1- 24-9% wt., based on the composition, of (ii) a block copolymer A-B-A, where each A is an independently selected polymer block of (a) a monoalkenyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, and B is a polymer block of (b) a conjugated diene. Average M.W. of each A is 8000-100,000, and of B, 25,000-500,000. The copolymer may contain up to 90% wt. A. (a) may be styrene, α-methylstyrene, or a ring-substituted alkyl styrene. (b) may be a C 4-10 compound e.g. butadiene, isoprene, or piperylene. The bitumen may be a straight-run, cracked, or blown asphalt, which may have been blended with high b.p. oil, e.g. residual oil. The bitumen may have softening point 21-63‹ C., PEN > 100, e.g. 150-350, or viscosity (99‹ C.) 100-1000 SSF. The composition may be used as binder and coating for fertilizer pellets, or as a consumable binder for pelletizing ores, the binder acting as fuel and as a reducing agent.
