Abstract

1,143,895. Bituminous laminates. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 8 Feb., 1968 [10 Feb., 1967], No. 6262/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Laminates are formed by laminating a bituminous composition to roofing-felt or resinbonded non-woven fabric, e.g. of cotton, which may contain other organic fibres or glass wool. The composition comprises in parts by weight (a) a block copolymer A-B-A, 100; (b) asphaltic bitumen of R and B softening-point 63‹ C., 150-450; (c) a finely divided mineral filler, 150-450; and (d) carbon black, 25-250. In (a), each A is an independently selected thermoplastic polymer block of (e) a vinylsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon, and B is an elastomeric polymer block of (f) a 1-alkene or (g) a conjugated diene, or a hydrogenated derivative thereof. (a) may be a "self-vulcanizing" copolymer in which hydrogenation has reduced the original unsaturation by at least 90%. The average MW of A may be 7500-100,000, and of B, 25,000-1,000,000. A may form 10-70% of the copolymer, (b) may have R and B point 24-60‹ C. and Pen (25‹ C.) 25-35‹ or more, or viscosity (100‹ C.) 100-1000 SSF. (c) may be CaCO 3 , clay, SiO 2 , asbestos, glass fibres, or talc, (d) may be FEF (fast extrusion furnace) black e.g. of size 0À074Á and bulk density 23À5 lb/ft<SP>3</SP>, or natural gas carbon of size 0À3-1Á and bulk density 40 lb./ft.<SP>3</SP>, (e) may be styrene or styrene carrying alkyl substituents on the benzene ring, (f) may have 2-12 C atoms, e.g. ethylene, propylene, butene-1, hexene-1, or octene-1. (g) may have 4-8 C atoms, e.g. isoprene or butadiene. The compositions may be prepared by dispersing the C black into a portion of the bitumen to form a masterbatch, to which the remaining components may be added. These laminates may be adhered to a roof surface by using a cold adhesive comprising 5-30% wt. block copolymer and 95-70% of an asphaltic bitumen having a low M.W. asphaltene fraction and a volatile aromatic hydrocarbon solvent. e.g. toluene, xylene, or benzene.
