Abstract

1,177,301. Fibre reinforced article. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 15 July, 1968, No. 33681/68. Addition to 1,139,817. Heading B8G. [Also in Division C7] A fibre reinforced metal matrix is made by winding at least one continuous fibre, e.g. of C or B on to a former and simultaneously coating the or each fibre with metal or alloy, e.g. by electrodeposition, electroless plating or vapour deposition, and pressing the or each fibre against the former by locating at least one pressure member, e.g. a roller or an endlessdriven belt, adjacent the former. As shown, a fibre 15 (or tow or yarn of fibre) from a reel 16 is passed to a bridge 12, mounted on a guide frame 13 above a plating tank 11, over a pulley 21 on a carrier 22 reciprocating on rails 23, 27 to be wound on a former 34 rotating in bearings 35, 36 in the bridge and immersed in the electrolytic bath. The roller 50 may be made of porous material and electrolyte may be fed via a pipe 51 to the interior of the roller, in which one of the electrodes 52 is mounted, to wet the fibre as it is being pressed against the former. During electrodeposition, the current may be reversed in polarity. The motor 38, which rotates the former via gears 37, 39-41, and the motor 29, which reciprocates the carrier via worm-shaft 30, may be synchronized to ensure winding on the former at a predetermined rate. When using a tow of fibres for making the matrix, the fibres may be spread by passing the tow over a convex surface prior to winding.
