Abstract

1,177,144. Luminescent materials. MATSUSHITA ELECTRONICS CORP. 19 June, 1967 [8 July, 1966], No. 28098/67. Heading C4S. A red-emitting phosphor which can be tightly packed for use in a C.R.T. comprises an europium activated oxide of yttrium and/or gadolinium fluxed with Li, Na, Be, Sr fluoride, V 2 O 5 , NH 4 vanadate, borax or boric acid, the phosphor having a surface smoothness such that the ratio of mean particle diameter determined by the gas adsorbtion and air permeability methods is no less than 0À8. The phosphor is prepared by adding oxalic acid to an aqueous solution of Y and En salts to precipitate oxalate which is then baked to obtain oxide and thus is heated to 1000-1400‹ C. with the flux. The phosphor is treated with silica sol or immersed in B 2 O 3 .12WO 3 or Ti(OC 2 H 5 ) 4 such that silica, B 2 O 3 .12WO 3 or TiO 2 is adsorbed by the phosphor when it is dried and baked. A colour C.R.T. screen with a multiplicity of dots is prepared by applying blue, green and red emitting phosphors suspended in aqueous photo-sensitive solutions of P.V.A. and NH 4 dichromate and illuminating the screen through a shadow mask. ZnS: Ag and (Zn.Cd)S: Ag are the blue and green emitting phosphors.
