Abstract

1,176,519. Semi-conductor devices. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE ENGLISH ELECTRIC SEMI-CONDUCTORS Ltd. 16 Oct., 1968 [28 Nov., 1967], No. 54156/67. Heading H1K. In an encapsulated semi-conductor device in which a semi-conductor element 1 is pressed on to a base 3 by a spring member 5 operating between a contact 6 and inwardly deformed fingers 8 on an encircling sleeve 9, the lower face 15 of the sleeve 9 abutting and bonded to the base 3 is of greater surface area than the crosssectional area of the remaining part 10 of the sleeve 9. As shown, the face 15 is provided by a flange 13 of a pressing 11 soldered to the upper part 10 of the sleeve. A further flange 14 on the pressing 11 supports and is bonded to a flange 16 of a cap 17 of the encapsulation. The upper part 18 of the cap 17 is of ceramic. The base 3 is made of copper while the sleeve 9 is of steel. In a modification, the flange 13 is omitted, the relatively large area of the surface 15 being provided by the thickness of the central portion 12 of the pressing 11 combined with that of the sleeve portion 10. The portion of the sleeve defining the surface 15 may be integral with the upper portion 10, either in the form of a flange or as a lower section having an increased wall thickness. An annular groove may be provided around the pedestal 2 to locate the sleeve radially.
