Abstract

1,176,227. Centrifugal-casting machines. CENTRE DE RECHERCHES DE PONT-AMOUSSON. 3 April, 1967 [28 June, 1966], No. 15133/67. Heading B3F. [Also in Division F4] A centrifugal-casting machine which is longitudinally movable to receive molten iron from a trough A is cooled by a closed water circuit which is mounted on the machine itself and a water tank 17 is mounted in a fixed position above the machine and connected to the water circuit by a flexible pipe S. As illustrated, a mould 1 and water jacket 2 are rotated together within the machine B by a motor M, and a pump 13 circulates water through pipes 12 and 14 and the water space 3. The pipes 12 and 14 and a drain 11 are connected to ports 7 in the jacket 2 by rotary seals 8. When a pyrometer 26 records a water temperature in the circuit above that desired, a pneumatic valve 23 is operated to allow cold water from a pipe 15 through a flexible connection S into the pipe 12. Displaced water from the space 3 passes to the overhead tank 17 and may overflow through a pipe 18. The tank 17 contains water at a temperature higher than the desired temperature in the space 3 and provides a sufficient head of water to keep water in contact with the mould 1 under the influence of centrifugal forces. Flow will also occur from the tank 17 to compensate for leakage from the joints 8.
