Class 64(iii) Relates to the cooling of apparatus, e.g. (melting, open hearth or electrical furnaces or firing or other apparatus) in which 'a cooling medium absorbing heat from the apparatus to be cooled is pumped through a circulation system which includes one or more heat exchangers for using the absorbed heat and in which the circulation system is connected to a source of cooling medium not taking part in the circulation so that cooling medium under pressure may be supplied to the system through a conduit from said source. According to the invention, the said conduit is provided with a valve adapted to be operated by the pressure regulator or a temperature regulator adapted to open at a predetermined pressure or predetermined temperature respectively of the cooling medium in the circulation system, and said conduit being connected to the circulation system at a point located upstream of the apparatus to be cooled and a check valve being inserted in the circulation system upstream of the point of connection of said conduit. In the form shown, cooling medium is circulated by a pump 10 through a plurality of cooling vessels 2 in a furnace 1 to a collecting vessel 6 and through a heat consumer 11, a check valve 12 being provided in the return pipe from the heat consumer 11. A reservoir 8 maintains the system full of zooling medium and through the operation of a float controlled valve 7 is itself replenished from a separate source 17 of cooling medium when the liquid falls below a predetermined level. The source 17 forms part of a supplemental system 13. If the temperature of the cooling medium flowing through the closed system becomes too high, or should the pressure rise due to failure of the pump or through other causes, additional and relatively cool cooling medium from the source 17 is supplied, the amount being controlled through automatic regulators 14, 15 responsive respectively to the temperature and to the pressure of the cooling medium in the system. The surplus cooling medium then obtaining in the system is discharged through the overflow 9. In a modification the pipe between the check valve 12 and the vessels 2 may be provided with a heat exchanger in which, under control of the temperature regulator 14, the circulating cooling medium may be cooled by medium from the source 17. The heat absorbed by the cooling medium may be used, e.g. in the heat consumer 11, for the heating of buildings or for drying purposes, or as shown for supplying heat to a separate heating system 16.
