Abstract
1,174,163. Casting ingots. DORTMUNDHORDER HUTTENUNION A.G. 14 April, 1967 [27 April, 1966], No. 17268/67. Heading B3F. In a method of producing a steel ingot having an outer skin in the killed condition without subcutaneous blow holes and a core in the semikilled or unkilled condition without voids, the initial melt of steel contains a proportion of carbon together with a related oxygen and manganese content such that the proportion of carbon is below a critical value to produce a killed solidified steel, the melt is poured and after a skin thickness has solidified an amount of carbon is added to the liquid core to raise its proportion of carbon above the said critical value to produce a semi-killed or unkilled solidified core. The carbon may be added by immersing a carbon or carbon containing rod in the liquid core, immersing a decomposable carbon containing container therein, or by using a carrier gas having a carbon suspension or a carbon containing gas that decomposes in the liquid core. The solidification of the skin may take place in a vacuum.
